Reviving an old thread because I saw recently that there has been an announcement for a live action Contra movie (and tv series?) that's currently in the works:

Chinese Contra Movie and TV show to be released worldwide.

So, yeah, according to that article, there's a movie and tv series being worked on and that they will be released worldwide, not just in China. An initial synopsis has been reveled as well. According to teh China Fil Insider:

QUOTE
While the plot of the film is similar to the classic game of the same name, it changes its location to an island in the South China Sea and adds in extra Chinese characters, according to its official description.

“In 1988, a huge meteorite lands on an uninhabited island in the South China Sea,” reads the official description published by China’s media watchdog.

“Chen Qiang and Li Zhiyong investigate but come up empty handed. 29 years later, Chen sends commandos Bill and Lance into a combat mission there to neutralize the villainous Red Falcon Organization, but end up facing a different enemy altogether.”

Interestingly enough, the change to the present day setting reflects the changes made to the initial US versions of the Contra games, rather than the original future-era settings of the Japanese and later US games.

Konami's on a roll it seems...Castlevania Netflix, now Chinese Contra Live Action? Not sure what to feel about this. On one hand, Contra has an easy to translate premise that's pretty much pretty much Alien on video game form, so it shouldn't be hard to make something entertaining at the least...but still, they can screw it up royally regardless.

There was also a short teaser apparently:

They included that beautiful intro song, so good start! Let's hope for a fun romp atleast...

By the way, some may remember we once had a "what if Strider was adapted into a morning saturday cartoon?", maybe it's time for a "what if Strider was adapted into a Hollywood Live Action Movie?"... tongue.gif

Is that bird shooting bullets out of its but in that teaser trailer? tongue.gif

Contra should have a leg up on other video-game-to-movie adaptations considering that it is essentially every gun-toting 80's sci-fi action movies mashed together, but there's still plenty of ways for it to turn out terrible. And it's interesting to see that the Contra franchise at least has life in it, even if it is in Japan - as well as this, there's also the Contra Returns mobile phone game that is exclusive to China.
