Since we have Castlevania and Gradius, I need to fill out the "holy trinity" of Konami's biggest series. Let's talk some Contra, eh wot?

To start: Contra on the NES is my second-favorite game of all time, just beneath Castlevania III. It is win and awesome, even if the Spread Gun makes it too easy sometimes... for better or worse!

I love the original Contra games, not so much the arcade versions but definitely the home games. However, I think the series took a hit with Hard Corps and never fully recovered... although having never played Contra IV or Contra ReBirth, I can't be 100% certain of that. All I know is that the two Appaloosa-developed PS1 games blew goats TO THE EXTREME, Shattered Soldier was an attempt at a return to form - although it basically ended up being another Hard Corps in the end - and Neo Contra was... really different.

But when it comes to Contra, Super Contra/C and Contra III (and Operation C, just for the hell of it), you couldn't ask for better run-n-guns.

Also: Contra Force does not count, it's not a true Contra. I prefer to call it by its intended name, Arc Hound.

Contra III was the high-water mark of the series. Making the machine gun your baseline gun was a stroke of genius. God, I killed so much time in high school playing C3 with friends. That and Super Double Dragon, oddly enough.

Fun fact: did you know that Contra III was originally going to be called Contra IV?

Yep. A prototype version exists that was called Contra IV and had the guys wearing green instead of blue and red. I remember seeing it in EGM waaaaaaaaaayyyyy back when.

I guess Konami had decided that Contra Force was going to be considered Contra III, so the SNES one had to be Contra IV. Luckily they changed their minds.

You're not kidding. I don't mind Contra Force for what it is, but as a legitimate part of Contra canon? Nope.

Wow! This is the first time I've heard of that. I actually played Contra Force into level 3 recently... it's not terrible, but it's not Contra. Such a bizarre game that's not entirely its own thing but not really much of a Contra game, primarily due to a lack of aliens. The atmosphere's just not the same, you know?

I do indeed. I remember playing through it way back when, expecting the alien plot to start kicking in at some point, but it never did.

That's like... making a Zelda game and not including Moblins.

Imagine it more like this: Nintendo creates Star Tropics for the Japanese market, then doesn't release it there. Then they decided to release it here but call it The Legend of Zelda: Link's Island Adventure instead, without changing anything except the title screen and Mike's name (to Link).

Good times I spent with NES Contra. It may not be hard, but hell if it's damn addictive. I could sit down and go spin around it constantly and not get boring of it. It's charm at work.

Outside it (and a chinese bootleg NES Contra Spirits), I've never tried any other, surprisingly enough. I once tried to buy a PS2 one (can't remember which), but for some god-only-knows reason it packed some random racing game instead. Maybe I should fire up an emulator or something...(though I hate playing with keyboards.)

...now I want to find a working NES...damn thread. tongue.gif

Allow me to BUMP this with a question: What does everyone make of Neo Contra? Is it Contra or ain't it? For a Contra game, it's definitely incredibly weird, but...... well, I stand by that statement. Let's see what other discussion happens. ph34r.gif
